Key Elementary

The Before and After School Program at Key Elementary in the Tulsa Public Schools District is doing a lot of exciting things. Recently they made Leprechaun Dust! The children maintained healthy practices by washing their hands first and then shook pistachio pudding (leprechaun dust) with milk.

They were able to use their Literacy skills by reading the recipe, and their Math skills by increasing and separating the measurements for the number of students participating. Teamwork made the activity a great success and a good time was had by all.

They even rinsed their own dishes! They weren’t all particularly fond of the taste, but they did love the process.

Barnard Program

The Barnard Before and After Care Program in the Tulsa Public Schools District is full of ideas for parent involvement. Every year they have several evening programs that parents attend and take part in. One of their favorite activities is a Chili Cooking Night.

The children get to take part in every step of the process. They work with the teacher to add ingredients to the pot by following the recipe and using their Literacy skills. And they strengthen their Math skills when they measure the ingredients. The students also make the placemats, tablecloths, and decorations using all their wonderful art ideas. They set the table and prepare speeches about their family to read aloud.

The parents and students all have a wonderful time and turn out is almost always 100 percent! The Chili Night is only one of the great parent involvement ideas that they have.
